Moving a USB Wordshark 5 or Numbershark 5 between Computers: Practical Issues
The USB product is designed for situations in which you need to use our program on more than one computer. It can be moved between Mac computers (NOT iPads) and Microsoft Win 8 or Win 10 computers easily. See Note 1 below if you need our program on a single computer only.
The USB product program lives on the USB, along with user data that you add in (e.g. pupils’ names, and their records of work). The program stores nothing on the different computers it is used on.
You are not practically limited* to the number of adults and children you may ”register” to the USB: You can load in as many children as you wish (Admin / Add and manage menu – note the “bulk import” option. You can also create as many teachers as you wish in the same way and give these their own passwords. Once registered, the USB can be moved around between computers / classrooms / locations.
We strongly recommend that you consider these points before purchase / use:
- Check your insurance will cover loss or damage
- NOTE that many schools do not allow USB sticks to be used in their machines. If considering our USB products for movement between home and school, please check with your school IT manager or technician that this is possible and permitted.
- The USB product has shown that it CAN be moved between machines many hundreds of times, and survive. However, it is small, it can be bent or lost, and does need to be closed down and “Safely ejected” before being moved between computers. For further details, see the separate article “Care of your Wordshark 5 or Numbershark 5 USB”. We suggest you brief everyone on this article.
- Weekly at least, go to Admin / Backup, and back up all data onto somewhere safe, as there is a reasonable possibility that someone may lose or break the USB.
- Label the USB so that it has a chance of coming back to you if found. This is also important if you are a school or family with 2 or more similar USB sticks: Personal data will not magically move from one USB to another, so learners may need to know that they always use “USB Stick A” and others always use “USB Stick B”. If you need to move a user between USB sticks, please see the separate article “Moving User Data between USB Sticks”.
- You will soon see that the program has loads of value for all ages, abilities and curriculum areas. Hence the usual choice within schools being the “Network Product” if this is technically possible (i.e. the school has networked Windows computers). This allows learners to access the program from any computer, with no need for USB sticks.
Note 1:
If you need our program on a single computer ONLY, the recommended “Download” alternative is more economical to buy, and normally simple and quick to install onto a single computer’s hard disk (allow 1Gb of space for this). Once installed, it is by its nature much harder to lose/misplace, and much harder to damage. Sales can advise should you prefer to “swap” to the Download.
*We would recommend no more than 500 users are registered onto a USB stick
